Zoning Hearing Board Vacancy – Letters of Interest by November 12

Pocono Township is accepting letters of interest for Pocono residents interested in being considered for a vacant alternate Zoning Hearing Board member position. Residents must indicate their interest in writing to the Township Manager at [email protected] or 112 Township Drive, Tannersville, PA 18372 by 3:00 P.M. on Friday, November 12, 2021. All applicants must attend Board of Commissioners meeting on November 15, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. for an interview by the Board.

The zoning hearing board assures the fair and equitable application of the Township zoning ordinance. The board hears appeals from the zoning officer’s determinations and grants relief from the literal enforcement of the zoning ordinance in certain hardship situations by means of a variance. The right to appeal for relief is an important step in ensuring that due process is followed when restricting use of private property for a predetermined public good. The zoning hearing board also hears applications for special use and challenges to the validity of ordinances.

Pocono Township has an opening for an alternate ZHB member, who may be called upon to serve in a zoning hearing when a regular member is not available. Interested applicants must be residents of the Township.  ZHB members serve 3-year terms. Alternates may participate in discussions or proceedings of the zoning hearing board, but may not vote unless designated and seated as a voting alternate for a given hearing.
